MELLOR ENGINE & HOSE CO.3

ENGINE 61 OF THE PORT CHESTER FIRE DEPARTMENT

ABOUT US

We are one of the longest-serving firehouses in Westchester County. Putnam & Mellor Engine & Hose Company Firehouse was originally named the 'South Main Street Firehouse', which was constructed in 1888. Our firehouse remained in active use for 107 years until a rock slide behind the firehouse and struck the rear wall of the building in 1995. When the rear wall collapsed, the structural damage was so bad that a full rehabilitation of the building was pronounced as impractical. The previous building had to be abandoned as an
active firehouse, and Mellor Engine had to be temporarily
displaced and relocated to what was soon to be nicknamed the ‘Tin Shed’.

This is how the nickname ‘Tin Men’ of Engine 61 came to be. Our company remained in the ‘Tin Shed’ for 6 years, until the new firehouse, and our current home, was completed in 2001!

Both companies relocated the building we now call home.

We can be found at 51-53 Grace Church Street in Port Chester, NY.
